Factory radio problem

I have a 1987 Mustang with a factory radio with a graphic equalizer. It includes a power button above the speaker selection knob. When I depress the power button it boosts the volume for an instant, but the volume returns to normal almost immediately. If I hold in the power button, the boosted volume remains until I remove my finger from it. Any ideas on what's wrong with it and can it be repaired?

The problem is a design flaw in the equalizer power button causing it to commonly fail. A bypass needs to be installed so the equalizers turns on with the radio eliminating the need for an equalizer power switch. See my store on eBay for service: oempartfinders
